Fes → Ifrane → Middle Atlas Mountains → Ziz Valley → Merzouga

Fes → Ifrane → Middle Atlas Mountains → Ziz Valley → Merzouga

The tour begins with a morning pick-up from your hotel or riad in Fes. The first stop is Ifrane — a brief 15-minute break for a coffee before continuing to the cedar forest of Azrou in the Middle Atlas Mountains, where Barbary macaques can be spotted roaming freely. The drive continues toward Merzouga via Midelt and along the Ziz Valley — a lush corridor of palm trees stretching toward the desert. Arriving in Merzouga in the afternoon, you check into a beautiful riad with golden sand dunes right outside the window. Dinner and overnight at the riad.

Full Day Exploring the Merzouga Desert

Full Day Exploring the Merzouga Desert

After a delicious breakfast at the riad, the full desert day begins. The first stop is Khamlia — a small village where the descendants of sub-Saharan Africans play a unique style of music called Gnawa. From there a 4x4 takes you off-road to Mefis, an abandoned village with old mines of Galena — a mineral once used to produce kohl. A visit to a nomadic Berber family living behind the Erg Chebbi dunes follows — tea is shared in their traditional tent as your guide explains their way of life away from civilization. In the afternoon, camels are waiting at the edge of the dunes. The ride takes you deep into Erg Chebbi, with a stop on a high dune for sandboarding and the full Saharan sunset. After dinner at the desert camp, the staff gathers around the fire — drumming, music, and a sky blazing with stars.

An early wake-up is highly recommended today to catch a peaceful desert sunrise. After breakfast at the camp, the road trip begins — passing through Rissani, Erfoud, and Tinghir on the way to Todra Gorge and Dades Gorge. If the day falls on a Sunday, Tuesday, or Thursday, the traditional Moroccan souk in Rissani is running — a fantastic cultural stop for local handicrafts, spices, and street food. Plenty of stops are made along the way to photograph the landscapes and learn about local traditions. Arriving in Dades Gorge in the afternoon, you check into your hotel. Dinner and overnight in the valley.

After breakfast, a drive along the Road of 1000 Kasbahs takes you to Ouarzazate — the Gateway to the Sahara and home to Atlas Studios, where film sets from dozens of major productions are preserved. Photos from outside are possible if visiting the studios does not interest you. From there the road leads to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Aït Ben Haddou Kasbah — used as a backdrop for Gladiator, Prince of Persia, and Game of Thrones. After exploring the kasbah and a satisfying lunch, the journey continues through the High Atlas Mountains, passing through charming Berber villages with stops along the way. The tour ends with a drop-off at your accommodation in Marrakech.

06 · Why this tour

Why travellers choose this one.

01

A full day in the desert

not just a night Description: Most 4-day tours rush through Merzouga. This one gives you an entire day — nomadic family visit, Khamlia Gnawa music, Mefis village, and a camel trek at sunset. The desert gets the time it deserves.

02

Fully private from Fes to Marrakech

Your own vehicle, your own guide, your own pace. The itinerary bends around your interests — more time at a stop you love, less time at one you don't.

03

Two gorges in one tour

Todra and Dades — two completely different canyon landscapes. Both are on day three with enough time to actually explore them, not just drive past.

04

Your choice of accommodation at every stop

Standard, premium, or luxury options at each overnight. You decide the level of comfort and we arrange accordingly.

05

The Road of 1000 Kasbahs on day four

The return to Marrakech follows one of the most scenic routes in Morocco — ancient fortified villages, palm valleys, and the Aït Ben Haddou Kasbah before the High Atlas crossing.

06

Luxury camps with private bathrooms

Every camp in our selection has private en-suite bathrooms inside the tent. No shared facilities, even deep in the Sahara.

★★★★★

"Well organised from start to finish — that is what this 4-day tour from Fes to Marrakech was. A friendly and knowledgeable guide knew the best spots for photographs across the country's beautiful landscapes. The sand dunes of Erg Chebbi were the highlight — a camel ride, a sunset, and a night under the stars. Skoura, Aït Ben Haddou, and the gorges were all exceptional. The food was locally prepared and tasted excellent throughout. An outstanding tour highly recommended for a lifetime experience."

"The company, the conversations, and the desert — all of it was unforgettable. A great deal was learned about the people, life, and culture of Morocco throughout this tour, making it one of the best experiences of my life. Friends who have seen the photographs are jealous — but the views were only part of it. The people on the tour were truly what made the difference."
