Morning pickup from your Marrakech riad or hotel. The drive heads south through the High Atlas Mountains with stops at the most scenic viewpoints. Along the way, a visit to the Telouet Kasbah — the remarkable former palace of the El Glaoui family, largely unknown to most tourists and a genuinely extraordinary piece of Moroccan history. Arriving at Aït Ben Haddou around midday, you explore the ancient fortified kasbah — a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987 and a film location for The Mummy, Gladiator, and Game of Thrones. Lunch here, then the route continues to Ouarzazate — often called the Hollywood of Africa. A visit to the Taourirt Kasbah, another El Glaoui stronghold, before transferring to your hotel for dinner and an overnight stay.

After breakfast, the drive heads east to Skoura — a vast oasis of over 4000 hectares of palm trees that once served as a rest stop for trans-Saharan camel caravans. The Amridil Kasbah in Skoura gives a vivid picture of daily life behind kasbah walls over 300 years ago. The route continues through Kelaat M'Gouna and the Rose Valley — spectacular in springtime when the valley blooms. From there, an off-road detour through Bou Tharar takes you to a Berber family living in a cave in the mountains — one of the most unexpected encounters on any Morocco tour. Tea with them before continuing to Dades Valley. On arrival, an optional walk or guided hike through the Monkey Fingers Canyon before dinner and an overnight stay at your hotel.

After breakfast, the drive follows the Tinghir oasis with a panoramic stop overlooking the palm groves and centuries-old kasbahs stretching through the valley below. A walk beneath the towering canyon walls of the Todra Gorge before pushing on toward the desert. Your camel is waiting at the edge of Erg Chebbi in the afternoon. Ride out as the afternoon light turns the sand from gold to deep red, stopping on a high dune ridge for the full Saharan sunset. Your luggage travels ahead by 4x4. At the camp, mint tea, dinner, Berber drumming, and a night sky full of stars.
Full day exploring the Merzouga desert
Rise early for the Saharan sunrise from the dunes. After breakfast at the camp, a full day in the desert begins. First, a visit to Khamlia village to hear live Gnawa music performed by local musicians — traditional rhythms with roots in sub-Saharan Africa. Then off-road to Mefis, an abandoned desert village known for its Galena mineral mines. A visit to a Nomadic Berber family living near the Erg Chebbi dunes — your guide provides context and translation for an encounter with a way of life that has barely changed in centuries. After lunch, you check into your riad with direct dune views. Time to rest, swim, or take a leisurely walk to the nearby dunes for the evening sunset. You can also choose to spend this second night at the desert camp if preferred.
Merzouga → Ziz Valley → Azrou Cedar Forest → Ifrane → Fes
One last Saharan sunrise from the dunes before breakfast at your riad, then the long drive north to Fes begins. The route passes through the Ziz Valley — a ribbon of palm oases threading through arid gorges — with a panoramic stop overlooking the palmeraie below. Further north, the road enters the cedar forests near Azrou in the Middle Atlas where Barbary macaques move freely through the trees. A brief stop to watch them, then a coffee break in Ifrane before the final stretch into Fes, arriving by late afternoon. Your driver drops you at your riad in the Medina.

What vehicle will we travel in?
Smaller groups travel in a Toyota Land Cruiser or similar 4x4. Larger groups use a Ford Tourneo Custom or Mercedes Sprinter minibus. All vehicles are private, air-conditioned, and chosen for comfort on long driving days.
How far in advance should I book?
