Marrakech → High Atlas → Aït Ben Haddou → Dades Valley
We pick you up from your Marrakech accommodation and head south over the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi-N-Tichka Pass. Your driver-guide stops at the best viewpoints along the way — and you can ask for extra stops whenever something catches your attention. After lunch in Aït Ben Haddou or Ouarzazate, the route continues through the Skoura palm oasis — where the Amridil Kasbah is worth a visit — and into the Rose Valley. If you're travelling in spring, the valley is in full bloom. The day ends at Dades Gorges, where the "monkey fingers" rock formations rise dramatically from the valley floor. Dinner and overnight at your hotel in the gorge.
Dades Valley → Todra Gorge → Merzouga
After breakfast, the drive follows the Dades and Todra Rivers through palm groves and Berber villages to Tinghir — where a walk beneath the towering 300-metre cliffs of the Todra Gorge is one of the most jaw-dropping moments of the whole tour. From there the road opens into desert country as you push toward Merzouga. Lunch is on the road. Once in Merzouga, your camel guide is waiting. You ride out into Erg Chebbi as the light turns golden, pause on a high dune for the full Saharan sunset, try sandboarding on the way down, then arrive at your luxury desert camp for dinner under the stars and Berber drumming around the fire.
Full day exploring the Merzouga desert
Rise early and climb the nearest dune to catch the Saharan sunrise — the colours over Erg Chebbi at dawn are something else entirely. After breakfast at the camp, a 4x4 takes you out for a full day in the desert. First stop is the area where nomadic families are settled — they welcome you into their tent for tea and a genuine conversation about life in the desert. Next is the hidden abandoned village of Mefis, home to old Galena mines you can explore. From there the route continues to Khamlia, where local Gnawa musicians perform traditional music that traces its roots to sub-Saharan Africa — lunch here at a local restaurant. After lunch, a stop at the Lake of Birds if conditions allow, then back to your riad in Merzouga for the evening.
Merzouga → Rissani → Agdez → Ouarzazate
Wake up early for one last sunrise from the terrace of your riad — the dunes are right there. After breakfast, the drive begins. First stop is Rissani, one of Morocco's oldest cities and the founding seat of the Alaouite dynasty that still rules today. If the day falls on Tuesday, Thursday, or Sunday, the traditional souk is running and worth a proper look. The route then heads west through the Draa Valley — Morocco's longest — with a panoramic stop in Agdez overlooking the vast palm oasis below. You arrive in Ouarzazate in the afternoon and check into your riad for the night.
Ouarzazate → Aït Ben Haddou → Telouet Kasbah → Marrakech
Breakfast at your riad, then a short exploration of Ouarzazate before heading out. The city is the gateway to the Sahara and the Hollywood of Africa — home to Atlas Studios, the largest film studio on the continent, and the Taourirt Kasbah. From there the road leads to Aït Ben Haddou, the UNESCO-listed fortified village that has been a backdrop for Gladiator, The Mummy, and Game of Thrones since 1987. After exploring the kasbah, the final stretch takes you north through the High Atlas Mountains with a stop at the Telouet Kasbah along the way. You arrive back in Marrakech in the late afternoon, dropped at your accommodation.

How long is the drive from Marrakech to Merzouga?
Around 9 hours total. This tour spreads it across two days with an overnight stop in the Dades Valley on day one — so you arrive at the desert relaxed, not exhausted from a full day in the car.
What if I don't want to ride a camel?
No problem at all — we transfer you to the desert camp by 4x4 at no extra charge.
Do the desert camps have private bathrooms?
Yes — every camp we use is a luxury camp with private en-suite bathrooms and showers inside each tent. No shared facilities.
What vehicle will we use?
Smaller groups travel in a Toyota Land Cruiser or similar 4x4. Larger groups use a Ford Tourneo Custom or Mercedes Sprinter minibus. All vehicles are private, air-conditioned, and chosen for comfort on long driving days.
Can we spend both nights at the desert camp instead of one night at the riad?
Yes — just let us know when booking and we'll arrange it. Some travellers prefer the full immersion of both nights in the dunes.
How far in advance should I book?
At least 2–3 weeks ahead, particularly during peak season (March–May and September–November). Last-minute spots sometimes open up — WhatsApp us to check.
How does payment work?
